The Taiwanese Yearbook of International Law --Acknowledgements

Dr. Ching-Chang Yen(President and Editor-in-Chief) (2016-05-18)

In my capacity as editor-in-chief of this publication, I am deeply indebted to many people for helping me complete this highly-anticipated work.

The Taiwanese Society of International Law (TSIL) came into existence in 2000 as a result of praiseworthy endeavor of the founder, Dr. Ming-Min Peng. Due to his well-respected achievement in the area of international law and more importantly his unswerving commitment to promoting Taiwan's identity internationally, Dr. Peng became the architect of TSIL and thereby led to the creation of TSIL in 2001.

Since then, TSIL has completed quite a remarkable job in so many ways. To put it simply, at different points in time, TSIL has not only promoted the awareness of the latest international issues to the general public in Taiwan, but also spared no effort to enhance the visibilities of Taiwan to the international society.

Based on Dr. Peng's great support, I was elected President of TSIL in March 2015. While considering it to be both a unique privilege and a welcoming duty, I have sought Dr. Peng's advice on how to make TSIL more well-recognized especially in international society. We share the dissatisfaction of Taiwan's absence in almost all international organizations, which has unjustifiably prevented Taiwan's voices from being heard. Equally, Dr. Peng and I are also proud that Taiwan has a lot to contribute to the entire world for the sake of international integrity.

Dr. Peng encouraged me to publish a yearbook of TSIL in English so as to provide the international community with better access to Taiwan's experiences. I accepted it with great pleasure; and this was the reason for me to bring this first-ever yearbook in English into being. I therefore would like to pay my tribute to Dr. Peng for his great support along the way.

In addition, I would like to register my primary acknowledgement to the contributors of this volume. Without their profound generosity to providing those quality papers, this yearbook could not be regarded as an important milestone in the development of TSIL. In this regard, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to Professor Barry Rider, OBE, Cambridge University, Professor Nisuke Ando, Director of the Kyoto Human Rights Research Institute, and Professor Masahiko Asada, Kyoto University.

I have been fortunate to be working with some of the most capable colleagues at TSIL, especially the editorial assistance from Secretary General Dr. Eric Hung and Deputy Secretary General Ms. Regina Saga, to whom I am deeply grateful.

Last but certainly not least, financial support for this project is provided by the Wu Foundation. Dr. Eric T. Wu, a distinguished scholar of international law and a successful entrepreneur, established the Wu Foundation in 1990 in honor of his late father Mr. Ho-Su Wu, founder of the Shin Kong Group, a conglomerate ranked among the top fives in Taiwan. The Wu Foundation has been well recognized for its dedication to supporting activities related to research institutes, academic and cultural journals, specific research projects, international scholarly conferences, and dissertation fellowships. I thankfully acknowledge the generous support from Dr. Eric T. Wu.
